Last year, I visited a place in Cornwall called Lizards Point, it was beautiful to see mountains, hills and a beautiful sea I would never have expected to see here in the UK. It was very reminiscent of the time I went to St Ives in 2009 to learn how to paint landscapes, so this painting feels like a love letter to that time. I painted using acrylic paints.Mikey Espinosa - Cornwall landscape inspired painting visit sept 2017

Mikey Espinosa – With you (St Ives)

I decided to test my ability to draw landscapes, just to get out of my comfort zone a little. The last landscape painting I did was when I went on a school trip to St Ives. St Ives is located in Cornwall and is a small seaside town with beautiful scenery. It’s a place filled with art galleries, cute shops and is home to many artists. Barbara Hepworth was a well-known sculptor who lived there and we visited the museum (which was her home) and her garden contained many of her works. So if you ever happen to be in Cornwall, visit St Ives.

This art piece I painted was inspired by the things I saw in St Ives and I referenced from photographs I took. When people think of England, they think of it as grey and dull, I was surprised at how turquoise and clear the sea was, the green plants and flowers added colour to St Ives and the white sand, contrasted with the rocks and pebbles. I was particularly fascinated with this place…

It was a small church that stood almost at the edge of a cliff and looked out to the sea, it looked so lonely and beautiful and you had to look up to see it as there was a slope you needed to walk up to get to it. I was inspired by this but instead of a Church I replaced it with a simple bench. The lighting was bad when I took the photograph and I was new to using my camera so I pretty much ended up with a dark image, but I tried to capture the warmth and movement I felt whilst I was there. I guess you could say this painting was also inspired by day dreaming about my trip there.

At a Cornish bakehouse! Freshly cooked Pastries! You can see Jiggly Bakes in the purple haha!

What the painting means to me…

Of course the painting can mean something totally different to what it means to me, it all depends on the person viewing it and what they get out of the painting. To me, this painting is about risks, seeing something you want or somewhere you want to be and taking risks. That’s just the gist of it, I don’t want to reveal too much and exactly what it means to me because I wouldn’t want to sway how a viewer would feel about it.
