Mikey Espinosa x Mel Grecia Quimpo fashion show 2017

Earlier this year, I collaborated with Mel Grecia Quimpo; a fashion designer from Aklan, Philippines.IMG_2734The theme was East asian beauty. What I loved about the catwalk is that there were a range of skin tones. I wanted to keep the designs simple and symbolic so I added flowers and animals.IMG_2771Screen Shot 2017-05-07 at 20.37.52Screen Shot 2017-05-07 at 20.48.19Here are images of the models wearing the dresses designed by Mel Grecia Quimpo and designs painted on by myself!IMG_3628IMG_3666IMG_3667This bomber jacket was worn by a male model.SKIRT Mikey Espinosa - Rommel painting (Feb 2017) 11

MIKEY ESPINOSA – 4 BEAUTIES OF CHINA – DIAO

Diao Chan – Said to be so beautiful, the moon would shy away in embarrassment when compared to her (existence uncertain, Three Kingdom period).

Diao Chan brought upon the fall of two allies, tyrant Dong Zhuo and his adopted son Lu Bu. Her adoptive father Minister Wangyun witnessed a brutal beheading at Dong Zhuos palace and was greatly disturbed. Diao Chan had noticed this and offered herself to find a way to eliminate the tyrant. She was presented as a concubine to Dong Zhuo as well as a wife to be to Lu Bu. They both couldn’t agree on how to settle the situation and Diao Chan added fuel to their feud causing great jealous and eventually Lu Bu assassinating Dong Zhuo. Her fate is still unknown, some say she wandered the lands with LuBu, others say she was killed with her father for their manipulation by Dong Zhuos remaining followers. A Brutal ending is also known saying that she was decapitated by the legendary Guan Yu to avoid any further disputes while a contrasting story tells us Guan Yu allowed her to live the rest of her days as a nun.

MIKEY ESPINOSA – WONDER GIRLS

I am a KPOP fan, but as KPOP became more an more mainstream and the industry kept popping out more bands and singers and I could not keep up. I became fans of several bands like 2NE1, Sistar, EXID just to name a few. But when I was a teenager looking for celebrities that looked like me, I discovered Wonder Girls on YOUTUBE. As well as Big bang and Girls Generation but Wonder Girls really touched me on a level! The music was fun and so were the dance moves and thats when my love of Kpop began in the year 2006. Ten years later the band have finally ended, with a few line up changes and returns I decided to create fan art to show my love for the group.Mikey Espinosa - Wonder girls teaserSohee, I always called her the youngest member, she was known for her cute persona on stage and her popularity was boosted when their hit song TELL ME came out and she did her aegyo phrase “Omona” (apologies if that was spelt wrong.) She left the group in 2014 to pursue her acting career and ended up in the well known zombie film “Train to Busan.”

Sun Mi was the visual of the group, model and singer she left in 2010 to continue her studies and once graduated she released a solo song before rejoining the Wonder Girls in 2015 during their revamped period.

Lim, also known as Hyelim joined the group in 2010, replacing Sun Mi. I always appreciated her dancing skills and rapping. It took me a while to get used to her being in the group but I was awed when she collaborated with Ye Eun during her solo period.

SunYe was the leader and lead vocals of the group, holding the group together all the way from the beginning until she left in 2015 to get married and start a family. The girls went to her wedding and it was great to see that they still support each other.

Hyuna is well known for her rapping and dancing and YES it is the Hyuna who released the catchy Bubble Pop song and who later joined the group 4minute. She was there in the beginning of the band but had left due to health issues before joining 4MINUTE.

Yubin was my bias in Wonder Girls and was the rapper of the group, replacing Hyuna. She remained in the band all the way through to the end. In the later years of the Wonder girls, they reached learned how to play instruments for their song I FEEL YOU and she had learnt how to play the drums.

Ye Eun, the longest member of the band and as the years went by, I grew more fonder of her. She started to write songs for the group especially during the revamped years.Mikey Espinosa - WonderGirls instagram post - ALLTOGETHER

I love the Wonder Girls and everything they have done for KPOP, for me Wonder Girls will always have a place in my heart!

MIKEY ESPINOSA – FILIPINO ANCESTRAL HOME

Painting my mothers ancestral home. The Grecia house, before it was knocked down in 2013, it was home to our family for just over 100 years. Belonging to Don Daniel Grecia and Señorita Socorro Grecia. I used Acrylic paints on canvas to capture this home of sweet memories.mikey-espinosa-ungka-old-house-painting-for-nanay2016-2mikey-espinosa-ungka-old-house-painting-for-nanay2016-3Windows were well ventilated in those days  with enough protection from the rain, most living spaces were on the top floor to make use of the cool breeze.mikey-espinosa-ungka-old-house-painting-for-nanay2016These houses are almost near extinction due to the fast developing pace of the modern world here in the Philippines and very few are being preserved. I feel privileged to have been able to be brought up in one and say bye to it.

MIKEY ESPINOSA – FILIPINA DRESS – MARIA CLARA

Because of my visit to the Philippines, I’ve had the opportunity to take in as much of the culture as I can and discovered that because of the Philippines being a melting pot of different cultures from Asia and the west, there have been many influences and changes to various traditional Filipina costumes.

The Maria Clara is probably one of the most recognisable of the Filipina traditional dresses, with the Mestiza being the other. The clothing is composed of four pieces, the camisa (the top) the panuelo (the scarf) the tapis and the saya. My interpretation of the dress is a little more revealing compared to the original which looks layered and almost gown like.maria-clara-mikey-espinosa-x-filipino-women-3-may-2016-completedmaria-clara-filipino-teaser-fashion

MIKEY ESPINOSA – FILIPINA DRESS – TRADITIONAL

Because of my visit to the Philippines, I’ve had the opportunity to take in as much of the culture as I can and discovered that because of the Philippines being a melting pot of different cultures from Asia and the west, there have been many influences and changes to various traditional Filipina costumes.

Inspired by the Igorot, there were so many ways I could have designed this dress, but I decided to incorporate the patterns found in clothing and the tattoos that represent strength and nature, depending on the tribe.
